Can Dogs Have Kale?
Though not one of the tastiest of vegetables, kale is rich in nutrients like vitamins A, K C, antioxidants and fibre, which may make kale an appealing option for pet parents to offer to their beloved furry friends.
Plain kale can be given to dogs in very, very small quantities but there are arguably safer and yummier vegetables to offer to your pup, like green beans or cucumber.
Is Kale Safe For Dogs?
Kale contains a natural compound known as isothiocyanate – also found in veggies like broccoli. Isothiocyanate is poisonous to dogs, so eating an enormous amount of kale means it can eventually become toxic for them as well as irritate their gut – but it has to be a sizeable amount to do this.
Can Dogs Eat Raw Kale?
Dogs can eat raw kale, but this can be harder for them to digest than cooked kale. Lightly steaming, boiling or baking unseasoned, plain kale may prove a little easier on their tummy.
The same goes for kale stems; even we humans cut those bits off because they’re tough and not a pleasant thing to eat. They also have a high calcium oxalate count which can prove problematic for your dog too, so it’s definitely not worth giving your dog kale stems.

As with all new foods, you should always take your pup’s introduction to it slowly. This will help avoid upsetting their stomach. Feed one or two pieces of kale and monitor their reaction. Kale shouldn’t be an everyday food item for a dog, but here and there is generally considered okay.
As with humans, all dogs will react differently to different foods, so always be mindful of this when trying new foods, snacks, and treats regardless of their touted benefits or safety approval.
